WHAT IS WORK BASED LEARNING?
The internship program is an arrangement involving the student, the student’s
parents/guardians, the school, and the businesses/industries/organizations of the
community. Each of these will benefit from the existence and operation of an effective
WBL program. Some benefits of the program include but are not limited to:
- Students receive guidance and feedback during the entire placement period.
- Business, industry, and organizations are utilized for specialized training.
- WBL experiences assist in exploring future career choices.
- The private sector is provided with opportunities to take an active part in the education and career preparation of students in the local community.
- Experiences are supplemented with technical information and encounters that cannot be simulated in the classroom.
WHO?
Seniors that have already completed a C4 pathway, or seniors that are enrolled in a pathway and are in the second semester of their senior year are eligible to do work based learning.
WHAT?
Work based learning oers students real work experience in a setting that allows them to practice and perform technical skills they have gained through their C4 pathway.
WHEN?
Students are released from school for half a day to go to work. This can happen in the morning or the afternoon. Students must work a minimum of 15 hours a week. Students must also report to the classroom one day a week to maintain classroom learning.
WHERE?
Work based learning takes place onsite at the company hosting the student.
HOW?
Work based learning requires a training plan that the student, company, and WBL coordinator create. The training plan outlines the skills and tasks the student will be performing. A supervisor or mentor should be assigned to the student from the company. The student keeps a weekly timesheet to document their hours and tasks during the week. This is signed by the supervisor. The WBL coordinator will serve as your connection to the school.
